APPEARANCE
FACE: Face is extremely thin and slender, with a prominent outreaching rectangular chin — overall it resembles the shape of a skull. Eyes are a deep brown, have epicanthal folds, and are shadowed with extremely heavy eyebags. They also have anisocoria, with the left pupil being bigger and the right pupil being smaller. Eyebrows are relatively thick and a bit scruffy. Mouth is prone to visible wrinkling during even the slightest displays of emotion, particularly crowding at the chin directly under the lips.
HAIR: Black in color. Decently curly, resting at a 3a type texture. It’s cut shorter at the front, with the back being longer and flooding down past their shoulders — it’s more or less an accidental overgrown mullet. Always looks a bit wet or 'scraggly' due to them being flakey about caring for it properly.
BODY: Roughly 5’0ft tall. Notably very skinny and lanky. Their left leg is somewhat shorter than their right one, and so they usually bend the latter to maneuver themself around. Has some light body hair, particularly prominent at the arms, legs and chest.
MAIN OUTFIT: An important thing to note is that their outfit is… actually colorless, predominantly. Whether this means its just like a monochrome grey arrangement that’s only embellished in artwork and writing for intrigue or if it’s all somehow enchanted to change hue chameleonically, who knows! But the typical 'blue' color scheme is mostly enforced when meeting them in the control room, otherwise changing arbitrarily: it appears more sanguine in the Summer District, greener in Spring, etc. The only colors that stay fully consistent regardless of environment are the green flourishes on their vest, suspender straps and shoes.
To actually describe the structure of it all, though… They don a sundial-like beret with a circular ring of roman numerals present near the edge. Top of the outfit is fairly cluttered… First they have a short-sleeve dress shirt with sharp, frilled hems at the sleeves, and an angular white collar with a brooch hooked in the center bearing a "I" numeral. Over this they wear a darker vest closed up by a green, planisphere-esque gemstone pendant, with smaller diamond-shaped star clasps further supporting this — the back of the vest features a sewed-on depiction of the constellation Fornax, with the text "FACILIS DESCENSUS AVERNI" right beneath it. Over THAT they wear white striped suspenders that resemble roman pillars, anchored to their pants by large green half-compass shaped clips. Arising from those are two pale sashes, yet again decorated with a linear ascension of roman numerals. These wrap back around to the opposite side of their suspenders, forming a finalised C shape. Their pants are layered, too — the lowermost layer is a pair of jeans, over which darker, looser chaps are worn. Socks are pale and striped, and stretch far up past their ankles. Shoes are an odd commixture of sneakers and dress shoes, with angular 'tongues' and slight heeling. A sun emblem dwells by the back of the shoe. They typically wear offwhite opera style gloves that stretch past their elbow.
Cane is customised and maintains the roman pillar motif. It has a major curvaceous valley right before the handle, with the handle itself bearing a cushioned membrane. A beam runs upwards from the base of the handle, which grants them extra elbow support. Downward from the same origin point is an enchanted kamal-like charm that can be reeled up and down to weigh the cane down or make it lighter.
GENERAL FASHION STYLE: The primary word I’d use to describe it is 'stuffy'. Even though their story era paradigm is remarkably much more confining than their usual style of dress, they’re just regularly drawn to very tight-fitting clothing. Dress shirts, vests and jeans are a staple of their usual couture. They also quite enjoy 'archaic' garments like suspenders, brooches or that one breed of tiny thin scarf. They’re also fond of necklaces, though specifically very loose ones — anything that’s too tight on their neck becomes uncomfortable. Same thing with bracelets that are too tight on the wrists.
They’re usually not too picky with textures of clothes, though tend to steer clear of overly fluffy or woolly garments. They also usually prefer wearing things that cover their body in full, or at the very least layering to achieve that affect — if not wearing a long-sleeved shirt, they’ll compensate by wearing extremely tall gloves; they usually prefer wearing long socks that swell up to their knees; etc… They’re not the most fond of showing off their limbs.
A frequent setpiece of their clothing is, simply, a funny hat. Any of the wide-brim variety work — though they do have a special fondness for cowboy hats and fancy berets. They also like accessories that glimmer and shine, though these are worn in moderation because they’re shy, heh — they particularly like green gemstones of any kind and deem them 'lucky'. Note the various green embellishments on their paradigm as demonstrative of this.
The color schemes of their fits are honestly still very ambiguous in my mind but one thing I can say is that they gravitate toward extremely dark clothing, with green being a frequent definitive color. They also, generally, like wearing striped clothes.
Though their style could hardly ever be deemed unfashionable — in fact, they straddle the line between respectable formality and homely elaboration quite well — though there’s an element of disorganisation and off-kilterness in their outfits that adds an odd je ne sais quoi feeling to how they dress…
POSTURE AND MOVEMENT: More or less defined by… well, tremulousness. Any kind of movement they make is characterised by jitter and instability — they’re prone to slipping if walking forward too harshly, stumbling whilst simply standing, having extremely shaky hands, constantly having to regrip things… Their lack of balance comes from a combination of eternal nausea and lightheadedness, and the difference they’ve got in leg lengths. Part of it also comes from an impulsive need to gesture with their hands, which completely displaces them, naturally. They often seem to overestimate their own strength, often attempting wide sweeping motions only to be caught in a series of swerves and hops instead.
Their face is extremely malleable and easy to contort. There’s a lot of pressure in the way they move their brows and mouth, often widening their eyes, gritting their teeth, grimacing strongly, etc. As a result of this, their face is often claimed by heavy amounts of creasing and wrinkling.
VOICE: Would be high-pitched were it not for how throaty and raspy they sound. Their voice is extremely hoarse, and prone to arbitrary breakage, whether resulting in outright splintering of their words, random quietness, bubbling or squeaking noises arising from the back of their throat… Because of this, they’re frequently intentionally shifting their volume, though it hardly works as compensation, instead ending with them either yelling inappropriately or speaking in a far too low whisper. They usually stick to keeping their voice low, since loud noises contribute to their nausea.
Their intonation is just as unstable as their audibility, with them often stressing syllables strangely, making plain phrases sound like questions and inversely making questions sound like concrete statements. A stutter is present, mostly audible with r’s, n’s and similar consonants.

TRIVIA
☀︎ The origin of their visions remains untouched upon in the story, but it relates to a sort of 'leakage' of dimensional matter that just happened to latch on to Peixin and thus grant them a heightened sensitivity to magic. The explanation I’ve always had in mind was that they were setting up some experimental magic-powered pyrotechnics at a gig, and some misconfiguration in those led to some garbled nonsense code imprinting itself on them. Since Fornax lies in tandem with all magic on Earth, this resulted in a permanent hook connecting them to Fornax, and consequently their proclivity for experiencing sights relayed by the ghosts. This whole predicament is basically the equivalent of writing some HTML and forgetting to close your tags somewhere thus causing the website to break, but like if it happened to a human person.
☀︎ Their connection to Fornax isn’t completely unbridled, also… Quite obviously they can’t just spectate the Fornax skies and hear the ghosts clearly. They’re simply more sensitive to outgoing messages than most other people, but Fornax itself still needs to initiate deliberate signals, and these can still appear cloudy just due to the sheer power of raw magical information being relayed over to a meat brain. Even if the ghosts weren’t just being intentionally obtuse with their visions, and were conversing in laconic verbalisms, Peixin would most probably still struggle to make sense of what they were saying due to natural interference. In fact Peixin would probably experience more interference in the face of a direct Fornax-to-person conversation than most other people due to their incessant anxiety — there’s a textual thing about a 'busier mind' being something that’d muddy up communication with people within Fornax, which is already a taxing mental process. This is the reason people like Freya and (to an EXTENT since the Facsimile interface is a filter and it isn’t "raw" openmindedness to Fornax) Marjolaine struggle far less to interpret dialogues from the dead even though they LACK Peixin’s heightened sense for magic. Conversely, it’s also why people like Demeter or Olzhas have had brush-ins with ghosts that have mostly gone unrecognised — they’re quite internally antsy and therefore tend to 'repel' proper communication coming in from Fornax. Those two in particular are also interesting to bring up since they demonstrate another variable that can impact the clarity of Fornax chats — that being lack of sobriety, which most certainly detrimented Peixin’s earlier understanding of their visions.
☀︎ Another thing that makes Peixin’s connection stringy despite their sensitivity is their choice of train residence: they specifically sought out the Summer District for its more Fornax-limiting construction. The thing about this move, combined with all the other affects mentioned above, is that although this does create a near-impermeable blanket against Fornax most of the time, the 'strength' with which visions are delivered can sometimes bypass this momentarily. Stress on 'momentarily' especially, because it means that for most of the story’s duration, they’re actually quite free of their visions save for intermittent second-long blasts of energy that just tear their mind asunder. It’s only a little better than having longer episodic hell migraines for hours on end.
☀︎ Though their main artistic endeavors revolved around live music, they’ve long maintained an auxiliary interest in architecture and interior design, being distinctly fond of fancy old buildings full of needless maximalist embellishment. That’s not to say they don’t appreciate simpler styles — they’re also quite fond of brutalism.
☀︎ They are fully fluent in English, Brazilian Portuguese and Latin. They have some heritage speaker pseudofluency in Mandarin, though can only speak it casually and are unable to write or read it. They also know a decent amount of Spanish, and a small smattering of German.

SUPPLEMENT
☀︎ Peixin was practically born out of a desire to replicate the very common 2000s prog concept album protagonist archetype of "guy who is having a horrible time in a surreal dreamscape". Direct demonstrations include the protagonist from Haken’s Visions, and naturally, Cerpin Taxt from The Mars Volta’s Deloused in the Comatorium.
☀︎ More loosely they were also based on the TOOL album 10,000 Days, to the point that their main blue palette was directly colorpicked from its cover. This is a really really evaporative connection though, mostly just arising out of me listening to the album a lot around the time I first designed them, and also because I thought TOOL would be a funny band to reference. The only song I’d actually deem vital to their development off there is Rosetta Stoned.
☀︎ They were heavily inspired by the Warrior Cats character Shadowsight… Once again, a guy who gets scary strange visions and is coerced into aiding a malign force that promises him safety in exchange. Shadowsight heavily inspired the trepidous "social" side of their presence — I definitely channelled the dynastic drama present in WC as a series when demonstrating the scathing way most traingoers think of Peixin.
☀︎ Also vaguely influenced by Axl Low from Guilty Gear, within the shared embodiment of "Extremely average guy who the universe just happened to choose to give illogical temporal powers to, y’know as like a trick!" The way some of their dialogue is written is also like… heavily within the scope of those Xrd Rev scenes where he’s overly conflicted and whiny and unable to trust his own intuition.
☀︎ Admittedly I have to dive deeper into EDM culture to grant them some more proper and refined subtle references to it, but that’s evidently also an influence. The green pendant on their vest quite literally bears the Aphex Twin symbol, heh. The more general spirit of remix culture is something I’ve been pushing harder in their characterisation as of late, in a manner similar to Freya’s metalheadisms and thus in a way that’s hard to point out concretely, but along the lines of applying sentiments of musical composition/subculture attitudes into the way a character exists in a narrative. For Peixin in particular, their arc’s all about attempts to syncretise themself with other people and the extremely rocky and variable results arising from that, combined with a point about endurance and integrity and how they’re kind of burying a lot of their true preferences and inclinations to 'stay afloat'. Maybe a bit tepid but eh. Something to be iterated on.
☀︎ The text on the back of their vest, "Facilis descensus averni", is as far as I know an irregular form of the Latin saying "The path to Hell is easy." This was particularly chosen to match with the titled subsection of the Mars Volta song Cygnus… Vismund Cygnus although in retrospect I should’ve chosen some Deloused lyric to tighten the Cerpin Taxt parallel. Oh well. The impulsivity of my music autism can’t be helped. The initial reason I chose it though was because, thinking of the whole backwards evolution of their motif and how their train era paradigm is completely insular from their older ones, the inclusion of a Latin saying specifically referencing a 'descent into hell' felt apt both in terms of conveying their temporal disconnect and their mixed "maybe I’ll survive, maybe I won’t" attitude about their Fornax undertaking… It’s a very backhanded ambiguous statement that can either be taken as "I will enter hell and come back without struggle" or "I can freely succumb to hell anytime". Smile.
