HISTORY

early life

He was born in Burnie, Tasmania on November 28, 2072. His mother had lived in the area for most of her life, while her father came from a decently long line of Māori immigrants that lived in mainland Australia. Throughout his early childhood, he developed an interest in contemporary history and social justice, heavily influenced by his dad who often lectured him and supplied him with potable literature on said topics. Thus, by the time he was around 10 years old, he’d already become somewhat of a smartass child genius who held many opinions and even more motivation to defend any of them with an unmatched ferventness. Most of his peers thought of him as attention-seeking and annoying, and so he spent most of his academic life preening the good-will of his teachers and older students. More idly, and perhaps more befitting of someone in their early teens, Beatrix had also developed a pretty viscous interest in chemistry, mostly angled toward theoretical applications of it. By the time he finished high school, he had also grown quite attached to physics, which was a science that featured heavy scrutiny at the current time, due to new magical discoveries that upset the validity of previous established theorems. As one might expect, his passion for scientific study and his background in debate heavily magnetised him into delving into the complicated, upturned world of 2090s theoretical physics. He set his mind on Canadian universities, which at the time, were spearheading a “revision” of the sciences… He very much wanted to be at ground zero of the whole ordeal. And he certainly got his wish.

By the time he turned 18 he’d moved to Gatineau, Quebec, to study theoretical physics, quickly striking an interest in local scientific organisations and taking on a number of internships at nearby labs. Though he initially took on plenty of work to keep himself from getting bored, dullness snaked its way into his throat regardless. He took up journalling as a hobby, which helped him develop what he deemed “a much more intelligent internal monologue” that soon made it easier for him to converse with others and make friends. And that he did! He felt much more comfortable sliding into social circles composed of people closer to his own age, rather than the misanthropic, limited pool of old people he’d always confined himself to. It was through a couple of small, overlapping friend groups that he developed a passion for vintage retrofuturistic literature, strange science fiction plays, comic books and tabletop games. To put it bluntly, he became an extremely lame pretentious nerd, but at least he was an approachable one!
He spent around 5 years revolving around the aforementioned similar sects, though along the years, he developed several new fixations that nobody around him really seemed to get… Among them a passion for contemporary theater, and a smaller adoration of modern architecture. Ever the incessant workaholic, he took to expanding on his interests in the only way he knew how — by taking classes for them. He joined a writer’s workshop and spent most of his time attending random lectures that intrigued him, much to the detriment of the rest of his connections… Most of his friends had moved on from their ‘juvenile’ earlier interests or had become too preoccupied with studies or work to maintain rapport with him. This more or less functioned as a scathing hint that he needed to put himself out there and do something with his life, rather than keep himself incubated till the end of his studies…
He took to a habit of exploring nearby cities and faux-vacationing for a few days across random countries. It was around this time of frequent aimless roaming that he’d eventually meet Marjolaine, whilst visiting a bar in Montréal with live music performances. Instantly bewitched by her voice and meek visage, Beatrix struck up conversation with the young opera singer. The two hit it right off, and exchanged contacts. Running off with her to some random sector of Quebec and spending entire nights shooting the breeze became rather commonplace, and within a couple of months of knowing each other, they both decided to enter a relationship.
Following about a year and a half of them dating, Beatrix had finally grown to realise that a seed he was constantly burying and replanting in the recesses of his mind would blister him for the rest of time if he did nothing about it — it, of course, being stray thoughts relating to him being a woman. He experimented with a noncommittal nonbinary identity for a few months, much to the support of Marjolaine who had personally started transitioning a little bit earlier, and eventually eased into presenting as fully feminine. Following a couple of trial and error blemishes relating to picking a proper name, considering the logistics of physical transition and polishing both outward presentation and pronouns, Beatrix eventually settled on a vague self-described sense of “strong, scalding femininity” and took to refurbishing his body. This change was kickstarted around the same time he’d completed his PhD, which was honestly far more tiring for him than the former matter.
Now beheld to no one, he decided to move in with Marjolaine and finally “start” his life. Earnestly exhausted by all his past scientific work, he decided to try and write a handful of novellas in the span of about 5 months. All of them dealt with strange, sensationalised murders in industrial, nonmagical worlds, a reoccuring theme that was partially driven by trying to put his longstanding skeptic philosophies of the medium on paper. Though he didn’t expect any of them to take off once published, and mostly just indulged in their creation for the sake of easing his own mind, the books had found themselves in the hands of sci-fi enthusiasts who deemed his writing the best the genre has seen in years… Mostly because it became quite unpopular over the past century with the advent of magical discoveries superceding past constructions of the future. But Beatrix’s haphazard writings stuck out as notably ambitious and oddly-phrased, which captivated the hearts of a specific niche of reader… Though nowhere close to making him famous or renowned, this venture did set him on the path to a feasible “success”, and he decided to prolong his job hunting break to write something a little more substantial and bloated.
It was a few months into the trek of writing a wholesale play that Marjolaine had started facing issues with his vocal cords — this only fanned the flame of Beatrix’s aspirations for fame, for he wanted to ease her mind and assure her of a dependable form of income. Slightly rushing to publish the thing during one of Marjolaine’s vocal rest epochs, he eagerly permitted a portrayal of the production in a Ottawa theater, to major success.
Marjolaine only grew more insular as her voice frayed further, and he soon confessed to wanting to sever off the life of fame that he’d been kicked out of and that Beatrix had just entered. Beatrix stuck to his steel, defensive of his newfound passion, though sought out a compromise to Marjolaine’s discomfort. The two eventually decided on living apart, and conferring through Tessellis calls. Beatrix took his leave to New York for a short period of time, though was disillusioned with the snobby attitude of the area and soon left for Puerto Rico. This marked the start of his “stay in a place for a year or two, start writing something in the meanwhile and move on to elsewhere when you’ve published it” routine. Though he’d spent a couple of inbetween months in a variety of other places for rest and simple pleasure, a list of locations that he’d undertaken big projects in goes as follows: Bayamón, Amsterdam, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Rovaniemi, Gaziantep (notable, spent about 4 years there), Dallas, Algiers, Nairobi, Hong Kong, Osaka (yet another 4 year dwelling), Chennai and Kuala Lumpur. Inbetween some of these are also a miscelleanous handful of visits to Marjolaine back in Quebec. Though he, yet again, did not become a world-famous author, he had built an audience and felt confident in writing whatever he wanted with the assurance that it would be well-received.
By mid-2108, he had moved to Singapore to pursue the start of yet another dramatic earworm framed as a dissonant period drama, though he never had the time to finish it, as Marjolaine had suddenly vanished at the end of September. He spent a colossal amount of weeks searching for her in various places she’d likely hide in, eventually coming to the realisation that she’d exiled herself to Fornax. With the obligation to do so tight in his chest, he followed her footsteps, and entered the train by the start of 2109’s January.

In the Perfect Ending, he returns to Earth without Marjolaine, keeping in contact with her for a few months before the both of them mutually agree on sort of just… carving the other out of their lives, and moving on. Though Beatrix does ensure he still has a line to Marjolaine in the case of an emergency, he more or less just goes back to writing short stories completely devoid of Fornax mentions… Solely because he decided to work on an honest, non-fiction autobiographical rundown of the event. He keeps in contact with the other ex-Fornaxees and, surprisingly, does put in the work to better befriend them.

APPEARANCE

FACE: Has a prominent square-ish jaw as a result of a moderate case of cherubism. He has a “dented” cleft chin as well. Wide nose with flat, downturned nostrils. Fairly thick eyebrows. Eyes have a partial epicanthic fold. Prominent crows feet and eye bags surround them. Irises are a dark hazel-y tone. A mole pricks the upper right side of his lips. He usually wears black lipstick as part of his paradigm. Also has thickset smile lines. His glasses are half-moon shaped, albeit at an exaggerated height. The lenses are lightly tinted blue, and the frames are black.
HAIR: A cool black. Texture is straight, though at longer lengths, can form mild waves. It’s not uniformly cut — the portions damming his face oscillate between being chin or shoulder length, as a result of a self-inflicted trimming… It was the first time he’d ever cut hair his hair. The back is fully overgrown, much to his own dismay. He tends to restrain it with a high bun, or the far more occasional ponytail. For especially fancy occasions, he may wear it freeform, though usually finds it far more inconvenient and usually keeps a hairtie on him if he changes his mind midway… which is often the case.
BODY: Pretty tall — he stands at roughly 5'11 feet. He’s fat, with most of it collecting at his waist and stomach. This is mixed with a good amount of muscle, very prominent at the biceps and back. Has plenty of thick body hair, notably upon his arms and chest. He also has a mole on the upside of his left shoulder blade, at the back.
He lacks a right forearm as a result of congenital limb deficiency — he wears a magical tube-like prosthetic that hangs around his arm and chest via harness. It can extend and compress itself to change its length, allowing him to “hide” it or grab things from a long distance. Though he usually defaults to keeping its end a simple claw, it can be switched out for other implements, such as a simple hook, a magnifying glass, a set of “typing claws” he uses when writing, etc. He often doesn’t bother, though, finding it far too situational and finicky for what it’s worth. In his youth he experimented with using “more advanced” magical prosthetics meant to resemble a fully-composed hand, but he found the sensation strange and uncomfortable — he’s been depending on clawlike mechanisms for decades, deeming them the most convenient and uninvasive. He may forgo wearing his prosthetic when he’s just lazing around by his lonesome, or in the presence of particularly warm and humid weather — his back gets tired easily around then.

GENERAL FASHION STYLE: Complete 50/50 between sporty stuff and formal clothing, usually just decided upon according to the needs of the outing. He leans towards feminine clothing, almost always donning a skirt or at the very least, broad pants, though may also combine this tendency with more “masculine” styles of clothing, such as a dress-shirt and suit blazer worn over a frilled dress.
His main palettes revolve around the three primary colors, alongside frequent purple accenting. Most of his clothing mimicks the repetitive and stark look of pop art, with some abstract expressionist touches.
He’s got keen hands when it comes to fixing up and arranging his own outfits, and notably slips out of his paradigm more often than most people. He likes showing off the tacky fabrics he finds and will sometimes deliberately mess with any small rips or blisters on his clothes as an excuse to incorporate asymmetry and incongruousness into his look… His vest is a pretty good expression of that, albeit an experimental one, for he manhandled and composed it into a patchy mess back when it was freshly bought. The train’s object-puller mechanisms have kind of just pushed him into further experimentation, something he’d formerly repressed as not to ‘waste’ clothing for no reason.
He also likes wearing jewellery, although mostly just restrains himself to bracelets and necklaces. Leather and stretchy hairtie-esque garments tend to be his favorites, he’s not a big fan of chained metals or overly fancy stuff.

VOICE: Very, very grainy. Years of smoking have not been translucent to his vocal cords — his voice tends to rumble and “bubble” as he speaks, and he’s got a very low tone that renders those tendencies even more abrasive. He tends to drawl his words out a lot, giving him a “cynical” affect even in times of utter genuineness. He hardly ever controls his tone, and thus is often misintepreted as sounding “harsh” or “angry” when he is at best mildly bothered… and unfortunately such comparisons tend to vex him more. There is a smooth, buried warmth in his voice, though — especially evident in his howl-y laughs and cackles, or whenever he’s trying to be comforting. He tends to speak at a slow pace, and intentionally rarely strays from that for the sake of sculpting his speech as intelligbly as possible.
Though he’s loosely trained his voice into a higher pitch, he hardly ever utilises the skill because he finds it “remarkably useless” in light of the smoker’s scratchiness that’s set in, and because he finds it harder to do nowadays due to the aforementioned habit.
Though he used to have a pretty strong Australian accent in his youth, it’s gotten worn down and diluted into a far more balanced Average English tone as a result of all his travels around the globe. He’s notably picked up a couple of mannerisms typical of demographics he lived around — most blatantly, he’s adopted various Canadian English pronounciations of words, often “raising” his vowels excessively.

TRIVIA

☀︎ He technically named himself after a character from a vintage (meaning; originating before the 21st century in a 2100s context) sci-fi show he quite liked, specifically after some kind of old bounty hunter woman named Viatrix. He actually utilised Viatrix as a nickname on Tessellis for a good while, which he now remarks is “painfully hilarious in retrospect”.
☀︎ Likewise he picked his middle name, Jett. Multiple possible reasonings for this exist because I personally can’t decide between three: could’ve named himself after Joan Jett because he feels like the kind of person to get really into her kind of rock as a young 20-something; could be after the color, as in jet black; and most humorously to me, could’ve named himself after Jet Black like the Cowboy Bebop character because he reminds him of himself. All of them could be true at once. They probably are.
☀︎ He owns a grey cat named Cygnus-OB2. It yells a lot.
☀︎ Over the years he picked up angling as a hobby, outright owning a fishing rod extension for his arm. One of his greatest grievences on Fornax is the lack of live animals making it very, very hard to fish. He’s been placated a bit with some idle visits to Octants with waterborne animals, but he deems it “uncomfortable” to have to pass through Ulises any time he wants to angle. So he usually just buries his aquatic dreams.

SUPPLEMENT

☀︎ Pretty heavily influenced by Lucrecia Mux from Psychonuats 2 as just… being a mean old lady who isn’t afraid to speak her mind. Who has a partner with terrible ideas about psychology and ethics. And who maybe has many a problems relating to emotional regulation. It’s fine.
☀︎ Kind of a backhanded influence since I only got into it like, long after making Beatrix, but going forward I’ve kept a lot of Cowboy Bebop’s general presentation and ‘style’ in mind when writing him. It feels like the kind of thing he’d really enjoy, I think mostly because I myself am not a fan of most linear sci-fi and need it to be weird to interest me. To dig deeper into it, I think two characters stick out as really Beatrix-esque: Victoria Terpsichore for being a cool big woman with a very harsh exterior and also a kitty cat, and the aforementioned Jet Black for being like. A “responsible” older guy who’s more or less the unofficial head of the spaceship he’s on but never really outwardly in a leadership position. Also has that external toughness thing going on. He smokes a cigarette. It runs very deep.
☀︎ A lot of his comportament and style is also influenced by like… Classic prog, jazz, blues type music. Namely hanging around King Crimso, Supertramp and Tom Waits. I really can’t explain this beyond like… yeah. Got that “tired dude in a bar just yelling at you about some crazy shit” energy to him.
☀︎ Him having cherubism was purely and wholly influenced by me watching Cyberkidz and seeing Robert Z’Dar in the role of classic character Zeist. Yuuuup.
